Health care considerations in Brazil
Article Abstract:
The public health care system in Brazil is faced with many problems such as mismanagement, poor quality service to the large number of employees, fraud and corruption. Unnecessary surgery, overbilling, exaggerated sickness and embezzlement are some examples of the fraud problems encountered. Because of these issues, employers give additional medical coverage through the private medical insurance market or private hospitals. The government is currently making changes to improve the quality of services delivered to the public by opening up the private sector to foreign capital to promote a more competitive market.

Health systems converge up to a point
Article Abstract:
Laurene A Graig's 'Health of Nations, 3d ed' compares the public and private health systems of Germany, The Netherlands, Japan, Canada and the UK with that of the US. The book notes how the six countries have reacted to the challenges that confront health systems worldwide, including the UK's 'big bang' approach and the adoption of incremental reforms in Germany and the Netherlands. The author sees reformed health-care systems of these countries maintaining their own unique characteristics even as they all try to meet on common ground.
