Higher education and its contingent faculty of the future: is it a risk worth taking?
Article Abstract:
There is tremendous pressure on institutions to cut the costs associated with the faculty, although many faculty members have unacceptably low wages. University program administrators have sued contingent academics because it has a dynamic effect on faculty ranks and also on higher education and the contingent workers.

Metro Chicago's higher education contingent faculty expanded rapidly after the Campus Equity Week in fall 2001. The founding of The Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor (COCAL) further sparked off organization among contingent faculty in Chicago City Colleges, the largest single group in the area.

The rise in employment of contingent faculty has become a major issue in America as the regular faculty, administrators and the public at large have different interests from those of the contingent ones. It is now become more of a social issue and is fueling social activism.
