Homophobia at work and how to manage it
Article Abstract:
The negative impact of the controversial Section 28 of the Local Government Act of 1988 is beginning to manifest itself in Great Britain with increasing homophobia - the fear of homosexuality resulting in prejudice and bigotry. the deep-rooted prejudices and myths about homosexuals and lesbians make them vulnerable to hostility and discrimination in the workplace. Although the employment appeal tribunal has been inconsistent when considering cases involving dismissal of employees on the grounds of their homosexuality, personnel managers should examine their own attitudes and review the organization's policy. A written statement of a company's equal opportunity policy should be sent to each employee.

Tough times for discrimination claims
Article Abstract:
The incidence of both race and sex discrimination claims in Great Britain increased slightly in 1987, but the proportion of successful claims declined: from 25.5% to 22.4% for sex discrimination and from 19.5% to 12.5% for race discrimination. It is not always easy to prove unequal treatment, although the Sex Discrimination Act and the Race Relations Act do make it illegal to treat individuals of one sex or racial group less favorably than those of other groups. Several individual cases of alleged racial or sexual discrimination are discussed.
