When Mr. becomes Ms. - or wants to!
Article Abstract:
Personnel management issues concerning transexuals and transvestites are discussed. Transvestism or 'gender dysphoria' is relatively unlikely to cause work environment problems, since few transvestites are public about their cross-dressing habit, but the possibility of blackmail in the case of a management transvestite should be considered. The transvestite typically appears to be a dominant and inherently male figure in the work place. The transsexual's desire to be reclassified as a member of the opposite sex can provoke strong reactions, however. It is estimated that there have been 1,000 sex change operations in the UK over the last two decades. Three areas which the employer should consider are: the relationship between the employee and supervisory personnel, the ability of the individual to perform efficiently, and the response of co-workers.

The politics of workplace participation
Article Abstract:
Investigations by the Work Research Unit (WRU) of the British Department of Employment on increasing the participation of workers in management decision-making activities have found that politics plays an important role in the process. Some of the findings of the WRU are described, among which are the increased level of worker satisfaction with decision-making participation and the strength of worker contributions to the decision-making process, based upon the theory that workers know the most about their jobs and company operational procedures. However, worker participation requires a high level of openness among personnel managers. The politics of the process are discussed, and the tentative steps organizations are taking toward employee participation are identified.

Balancing work and the family: divided loyalties or constructive partnership?
Article Abstract:
Organizations increasingly address employees' life issues in addition to their career issues as the skills shortage becomes a major concern and as social and family changes cause attitudes to shift. In order to attract and retain workers, career issues such as managing relocation, self-development, and career-life management are actively addressed through workshops and ongoing counselling. Progressive organizations also address work-family issues with such strategies as implementing effective equal opportunities policies and training practices; offering childcare benefits; and addressing the issue of the increasing number of dual-career couples.
