Hotel creates HMO south of the border

Hotel Del Coronado was given the Personnel Journal Optimas Award for innovation. The award was in recognition of the hotel's initiatives of establishing the first health maintenance organization (HMO) in Mexico. The hotel is known for its accommodations, service and location on the Coronado Peninsula across the bay from San Diego, CA. Coronado shares a border with Mexico, which affords the hotel an extended labor pool from nearby Tijuana. However, employing 200 Mexican green-card holders results in several human resource challenges, one of which is adequate health care coverage for Mexican dependents. The change from an indemnity plan to a HMO provider forced hotel management to seek insurance providers and hospital facilities in Mexico. It established the first HMO in that country in cooperation with the Hospital del Rio, which has enrolled employees from other hotels in San Diego as well, for lower healthcare costs than in the US.

Consider cost, controls and reasons for implementing domestic-partner benefits
Article Abstract:
HR management is now tasked with implementing domestic-partner benefits. According to Reese Smith, the employee benefits director at Levi Strauss & Co., HR managers should clarify the company's objectives for extending benefits to domestic partners. Smith said that Levi Strauss implemented its domestic-partner benefits because it wanted to align its non-discrimination policy with its compensation practice. Smith also cited the cost as another issue to be considered although he noted that the cost of domestic-partner benefits is actually lower than spousal benefits. Smith also mentioned insurance coverage for domestic partners, eligibility requirements and reactions by several parties as other issues that need to be addressed by HR managers. Ed Mickens, editor of a gay-oriented newsletter for employees, concurred with Smith. He added that prejudice is an issue that may affect domestic-partner benefits.

Creating a culture of caring pays off

Bethesda, MD-based Calvert Group is proof that a company can be both socially responsible and profitable. The mutual funds company saw the need to restructure its benefits and HR programs when it realized that its employees were dissatisfied with the quality of their work lives. It decided to adopt benefits and personnel policies that addressed the various needs of its employees, including survival, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs. Calvert tries to meet employees' survival needs with compensation programs, and health and wellness programs; to fulfill their emotional needs by developing an environment of trust where people are given respect; to satisfy psychological needs by providing employee growth and development programs; and to attend to employees' spiritual needs by offering them to do meaningful work inside and outside the company.
