How Arizona slashed health care costs
Article Abstract:
With health care costs increasing at an annual rate in excess of 25 percent, Arizona decided in 1984 to reduce its insurance cost, without reducing coverage or increasing employee contributions. Working with its primary insurance provider, The Equitable, Arizona encouraged employees to consider alternatives to hospitals (which accounted for two-thirds of state medical expenses). Some of the alternatives considered include: in-home health care, out-patient surgical clinics, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. Arizona expects an increase in health costs of only 16 percent in 1985.

Is Education the Key to Lower Health Care Costs?
Article Abstract:
With the rising costs of health care, employers are looking for ways to contain health care costs. Many strategies for reducing health care costs are examined. The strategy that makes the most sense is called health promotion. Health promotion is a four-step process which includes educating people about health risks, helping people identify their health risk factors, helping people reduce or eliminate their health risks and finally helping people maintain a healthier lifestyle. The evaluation of health promotion programs is examined.
