AIDS education on a quilt
Article Abstract:
Paula Harris of the San Franciso, CA-based 'The Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt' believes that the quilt has come to serve as a springboard for discussion about AIDS. The Memorial Quilt program was started in 1987 when Cleve Jones made a quilt in remembrance of a friend who had succumbed to the disease. Since then the quilt has become an internationally-known symbol of AIDS remembrance and awareness. By 1988, the quilt panels made by those who have known AIDS victims have already reached 8,288. Harris feels that displaying memorial quilts in the workplace will provide an opportunity for employees with AIDS-afflicted loved ones deal with their grief together with their colleagues. Having the quilts in the workplace will also demonstrate that the organization acknowledges the existence of AIDS and sympathizes with those suffering from the disease.

Measuring work in the electronic age
Article Abstract:
The use of electronic surveillance systems to monitor the work performance of employees is a controversial issue. Most human resource (HR) professionals (82.4%) believed that monitoring employees by listening to their telephone conversations is improper. More than 60% of these professionals also do not approve of the use of hidden video cameras to keep track of work performance. In a 1978 survey, 66% of the public and 59% of employees said a law should be passed to prohibit the the use of closed circuit television to observe employees at work. About 77% of employers, however, believed that such a practice should not be banned. There are currently about 10 million employees whose work performances are being monitored with electronic surveillance equipment.
