Human resource management: gendered terrain?
Article Abstract:
It is important to consider how diversity within the workforce connects with human resource management in terms of gender, one of the main dimensions of diversity. An analysis of two case-study companies which adopt contrasting human resource management policies and practices indicates that women's opportunities are affected by the human resource management approach used within their organization. The nature and form of careers made available to both men and women are influenced by external factors, such as the need to reduce costs, and by internal factors, such as leadership traditions.

Counsel for the depressed
Article Abstract:
Resistance to employee assistance programs (EAPs) is gradually declining as more companies realize that counselling aids their workers with problems such as stress, substance abuse, or depression. Counselling is available, for any type of problem including non-work-related issues, handled mostly over the phone with outside contractors. EAPs help employees feeling that their employers care about their well-being and stress levels. Employers believe that EAPs are valuable in reducing turnover. Managerial and employee support are critical to the acceptance of EAPs.
