Insourcing saves jobs at Harman
Article Abstract:
Household audio and video equipment manufacturer Harman International Industries Inc. avoids laying off its employees by assigning them to temporary jobs when there is a lull in productivity. Harman International Chmn. Sidney Harman initiated the Off-line Enterprises program to allow for the creation of a job bank of projects where assembly workers and employees supporting assembly operations could be temporarily assigned until the demand for their labor in their original jobs increases once again. The temporary projects fall into four categories, namely, manufacturing of products normally bought from outside vendors, provision of service personnel usually contracted via external suppliers, conversion of waste byproducts into salable products and sales training for outlet stores. Through this program, Harman is able to retain investment on employee training and development, produce new products and save on costs.

Share thy neighbor's workers
Article Abstract:
Soft drink bottler Brooks Beverage Management Inc. (BBMI) is able to avoid laying off employees during the low-production season by temporarily loaning these workers to its corporate neighbor, the international office furniture manufacturer Haworth Inc. The company lends the 55 employees working in its alternative-beverages production center during the slowdown period between September and March, a time when coffee and other beverages are preferred by drinkers and alternative beverages are not that popular. This way, the company is able to keep highly trained, qualified and pre-screened employees without having to employ them when they are not needed. Also, BBMI is sure that these employees will be available when they are needed to return to their production stations. Management chose Haworth because it is only two miles away from BBMI and it offers multiple shifts.

Workers learn to walk so they can run
Article Abstract:
Literacy training is being provided to the employees of the Bellwood, IL, plant of Borg-Warner Automotive Inc. to enable them to participate in team-based initiatives. The pilot program involved the participation of 45 team leaders who were not able to pass the Career Ability Placement Survey in self-directed learning sessions. During these sessions, students worked in pairs through the required reading and arithmetic tasks at their own pace. It involved diagnostic prescriptive testing, fundamental and combined skills, direct instruction, and mastery training. The success of this initial program prompted management to continue the initiative by making operator-level volunteers to undergo the same training. It plans to provide the same learning opportunity for every shop-floor employee in the coming years.
