Sowing seeds for the future
Article Abstract:
Garden Festival Wales Ltd has embarked on an ambitious training program for its temporary workforce assembled for the UK's fifth garden festival in Ebbw Vale, Wales. The major objective of the festival is the beautification of the post-industrial wasteland of Ebbw Vale through the creation of gardens, lakes and waterfalls. Garden Festival Wales also aims to help the workers in the area acquire new skills. The collapse of Wales' coal and steel industries practically took away the livelihood of whole communities. The training of transferable skills provided by Garden Festival is hoped to increase Ebbv Vales' chances of attracting investors from outside the area.

Turning managers into assessors
Article Abstract:
ICI Pharmaceuticals Group has developed a systematic approach for training line managers to act as assessors in the company's assessment and development centers. The formal assessor training program is based on a competency model approach that managers are expected to understand before they undertake any assessment duties. The model stresses five areas of competency: management of people, influencing of others, self-management, thinking, and achievement. The ICI program also provides managers with training in behavioral event interviewing and group process evaluation skills.
