Job Evaluation: Its Role in the Comparable Worth Debate
Article Abstract:
Job evaluation is a methodology by which dissimilar jobs can be compared to establish comparable worth between workers in diverse work forces. The Hay Guide Chart- Profile method of job evaluation works best where employees understand the social structure of their companies, and accept the values implied by the job evaluation method. There are some limited situations when comparable worth can be applied in all jobs. However, in more heterogeneous situations, job evaluation is most useful to determine the scope of pay inequity. Existing equal opportunity laws should be used to end wage discrimination.

A Status Report on the Theory of Comparable Worth: Recent Developments in the Law of Wage Discrimination
Article Abstract:
The United States Supreme Court has continued to refuse to recognize the theory of comparable worth. Its decision in the case of County of Washington v. Gunther in 1981 shows the court's reluctance to evaluate wage discrimination on a bases of the comparable worth of male and female jobs. However, judges have been willing to make decisions resulting from detailed comparisons of job content to determine wage discrimination under the Equal Pay Act. Under this type of decision, women in sex segregated jobs may be entitled to compensation if their work is very similar to that of higher paid males.

Evaluating Job Evaluation: Emerging Research Issues for Comparable Worth Analysis
Article Abstract:
There are a number of background factors that contribute to the wage discrimination problem. These are differences in age, education, race and employment history. Historical and societal factors also contribute. To understand all these factors concerning wage discrimination and the concept of comparable worth, interdisciplinary research is required. Growing civil rights concerns about equal pay will probably result in an increase in research on job evaluation and an analysis of wage setting procedures.
