Keep up production through cross-training
Article Abstract:
A growing number of companies are starting to cross-train their workers to perform related tasks to ensure that production will remain uninterrrupted even in the absence of key employees. Recognizing the potential benefits of cross-training, New York-based Graphic Controls Corp (GCC) has launched its 'designated trainee program.' The program was designed to make GCC workers versatile by equipping them with various skills that would allow them to work in areas where they would be needed. With this skills enhancement and job enrichment program, GCC also hopes to widen their workers' opportunities for growth and development. The company has yet to determine actual savings from its program, but it reports positive response from both management and employees. Employees see the program as a way of developing more skills, while managers view it as a means for lessening the need for temporary help.
