Labor adversaries bury the hatchet
Article Abstract:
Animosity and mistrust between the management of SSI Services Inc. and its workers reined until a new contract negotiation process was put in place in 1993. Representatives of management and the Arnold Engineering Metal Trades Council, the labor union representing the employees at SSI Services, discussed in a series of meetings the work issues relevant to the company, thereby improving communication lines between the two parties. They even literally 'buried the hatchet' by holding a mock funeral to celebrate the end of bad feelings in the organization. Then, they adopted target-specific bargaining, a negotiation approach developed by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service that requires the negotiating parties to concentrate on narrowing down work problems to just a few major issues and find solutions using joint data-collection and problem-solving teams.

Sleep Inn wakes up to new labor
Article Abstract:
Choice Hotels International Inc management fulfilled the desire to operate a low-priced, no-frills hotel and addressed the problems of labor shortages and declining employee productivity in the service industry by designing Sleep Inn hotels. Sleep Inns use less labor, yet provide suitable rooms at competitive prices. As a result, Personnel Journal awarded Sleep Inn the 1991 Optimas Award in the competitive advantage category. Sleep Inn overcame labor problems by designing smaller rooms that are easier to clean, placing laundry rooms near front desks, enabling night clerks to assist in laundering towels and sheets, and installing electronic security systems that track employee and customer movements.
