W Edwards Deming
Article Abstract:
US-born consultant W Edwards Deming is highly respected all over the globe for his many achievements in the area of quality control. Some of the beliefs underlying Deming's approach to quality management include the need for workers to understand what their jobs are and how they relate to other workers, the need for a work environment that fosters cooperation and discourages competition, the need for continual evaluation of performance to assess performance improvements, the need for managers to change their attitudes, and the need to take a more comprehensive view of the process of sourcing, production and distribution. In recognition of his work on quality, Deming was awarded the Second Order Medal of the Sacred Treasure by the Japanese emperor. He also inspired the establishment of Japan's Deming prize for quality and the British Deming Association.
