Leadership behaviour in Eastern Europe: Finnish expatriates' experiences in Russia and Estonia
Article Abstract:
A study of Finnish managers working in Russia and Estonia showed that there are many differences in how companies are run. Russian and Estonian managers were less likely to plan and set goals. Staff only do what is in their job description and have to be told exactly what to do and then supervised to make sure they do it. They are not interested in planning, teamwork or being involved with the business. Finnish managers working in Russia had to adopt tougher strategies to maintain work levels. However, Russian and Estonian managers are beginning to adopt Western leadership behaviour.
