Management and organization principles for the information economy
Article Abstract:
Rapid technological advances have given rise to new organizational principles and business practices. The increasing sophistication of information technology, in particular, is expected to bring about the 'informationalization' of the economy. Informationalized businesses will be characterized by mass customization, rapid customer response, on-demand production and other new processes. The field of human resource (HR) management is bound to undergo drastic changes. The recruitment, training and development of employees will have to reflect new management styles and business concepts. The HR function may grow so complicated and so highly differentiated that certain operations may have to be handled by outside agencies.

New challenges for Japanese multinationals: is organization adaptation their Achilles heel?
Article Abstract:
Many Japanese multinational firms have started to realize that they face some basic and tough organizational challenges as their size, number, and complexity increases. Research on several successful and large firms in this class is examined to help define the source and nature of some of the challenges the companies face and the ways in which they might be resolved. A short assessment is provided of the traditional corporate capabilities and current managerial techniques used in Japanese firms. These are compared to the evolving challenges found in the international milieu. Barriers and constraints to effect response to the new demands are identified, and a series of actions are proposed to overcome them.

Harnessing the potential of information technology for support of the new global organization
Article Abstract:
Organizations can take advantage of the benefits of information technology (IT) in the global business environment. Computer hardware can reduce costs and increase organizational capabilities, and many companies are developing software packages to meet business needs. The success of IT in global corporations depends on several factors, including identifying business opportunities, justifying investments in information systems, developing new systems, and adopting the systems. Business schools should focus on such issues as the prioritization of IT investments, and the management of system implementation.
