Must industry shoulder Uncle Sam's failures?
Article Abstract:
The cumulative effect of government social programs on US businesses is substantial, and can have a strong impact on their ability to compete. The federal corporate tax rate will be about 40 percent this year, and direct levies such as Social Security add another 10 percent to employer payroll expenses. Government unwillingness or inability to face social problems directly leads to an increasing corporate burden in handling difficulties in the areas of health care, retirement, parental leaves of absence, and management of illegal aliens.
