Manipulate HRIS data for better decisions
Article Abstract:
Personnel records that are on a storage and retrieval system can be used for decision support analyses. Data integrity must be protected; this can be done by producing lists for line managers and sorting data by critical fields to locate data entry and coding mistakes. Data can then be used to help in decision making. Applications of personnel data include: frequency distributions, mean differences, correlation, and regression analyses. These analyses can be used to identify trends among the employees. Statistical software packages are available that can simplify regression and correlation analysis. Graphics software packages are available that can be used to represent and simplify results.

Report files maximize query performance
Article Abstract:
Personnel management professionals can enhance the performance of the retrieval of information from employee data bases by creating static report files that would include the most frequently used data elements for reporting. Reporting files can increase the performance queries and decrease turnaround time, and consequently move from a batch to an interactive environment. The factors that are necessary for the creation of appropriate report files include small subsets of data elements to satisfy large numbers of reporting requirements, and real-time date retrieval.

Computers help link performance to pay
Article Abstract:
Computer programs are available that make it possible to transform performance appraisal ratings into projected salary increases. The merit increase simulation routine is a series of templates that use an algebraic formula to optimize pay raises for the individual workers within a unit. The increases are based on: employee performance, payroll increases budgeted for the unit, and the amount of merit increase for each performance level.
