More Britons working longer hours, finds new research
Article Abstract:
A survey by Gallup for The Observer Newspaper, based on 2,000 returned questionnaires, indicates that an increasing number of Britons are working longer hours. Changing working patterns in terms of part-time workers and extensive restructuring leading to reduced workforces have compelled 80% of employees to accept additional responsibilities. Despite working longer hours, 75% of respondents felt less secure about their jobs. Almost 50% of the surveyed people had learnt a new skill in the past six months to improve their positions.

Annual hours brings widespread change to chemicals
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom's chemical industry has adopted the system of annual hours, resulting in widespread changes, according to a survey and report by the Chemical Industries Assn. Annual hours is a technique of figuring labor time on an annual instead of weekly system. This can cut administrative, labor and management costs. For example, overtime pay could be reduced, and workers could have longer shifts than eight hours.

The use of annual hours
Article Abstract:
The public and private sectors are meeting their production needs with the use of annual hours. Employers schedule certain times when employees may work hours above or below the standard working week. Annual hours systems are individualized for each organization and are applied to manual employees, shiftworkers and supervisors but seemingly not to white collar employees or senior executives.
