CALPERS' plan for long-term care
Article Abstract:
The California Public Employees Retirement System (CALPERS) has established a new long-term care program. CALPERS covers almost 1.5 million public employees in over 2,300 government entities with its retirement and health services. In Jan. 1995, the system expanded into in-home care, community-based, nursing-home and custodial services. Its new long-term program is noteworthy because it is a self-insured group program, the fees and claims of which are paid out from a member premium pool. Its prices are 20% to 30% lower than similar packages.

Techniques for securing nonqualified funds
Article Abstract:
Nonqualified plans are increasingly being preferred as tax-effective ways to compensate for lost benefits and deferred compensation opportunities. However, corporate insolvency and change in management pose major risks to nonqualified benefits. To secure benefits, several techniques can be employed. These include secular trusts, nonqualified annuities, third party guarantees, rabbi trusts, springing rabbi trusts, rabbicular trusts, agency arrangements and split dollar life insurance.
