Nabisco's winning strategy
Article Abstract:
A series of personnel initiatives implemented by Nabisco Brands after taking over Great Britain's Associated Biscuits in 1982 proved to be catalysts for major changes in what had been a very traditional firm. Priority areas for change beyond the personnel function per se included: managerial performance, industrial relations, pay, productivity, human resources, and employee communications. Personnel reporting structures were changed, a 'crash' program of personnel management training was implemented, and a new performance appraisal system was installed. The company's experience in revitalized relationships with labor is described in the context of agreements reached at Smith Crisps factories and the Aintree bakery. Nabisco sales turnover has increased by 14.5 percent since 1984, and profitability is up 35 percent over the same period.

Developing managers in a merged organisation
Article Abstract:
The merger of the Nationwide Building Society and the Anglia Building Society provided the human resources department with the opportunity of evaluating the new organization's senior executives and creating a management development strategy. The senior managers possessed several strengths, including professional knowledge and critical reasoning skills, but several development needs were identified, including increased awareness of the business environment, improved strategic planning capabilities, and increased proactivity. The organization worked with an external management development team to develop an eight-day management development program, followed by a three-month group project. The program allowed the building society to improve management skills and business awareness.
