Networks empower employees
Article Abstract:
Employee networks are becoming one of the best means for workers to analyze the issues their ranks face within the company structure, consolidate their stand on these issues, relay these concerns to the top levels of management, and work out the solutions. Most predominant of these networks are those comprised of minorities. Its grass-roots origin and the fact that it is not mandated by the company, yet supported by management, gives the network its effectivity. Network objectives and structures vary for every company. Aside from furthering their professional development, networks can assist employees in honing leadership skills and creating mentor relationships. Network goals are not limited to the corporate context but also extend to community affairs. Avon Products Inc, McDonald's Corp, and American Telephone and Telegraph Co are three companies that integrate employee networks into their corporate structure.

Talking frankly about domestic violence
Article Abstract:
Companies are starting to acknowledge that domestic violence is a personnel issue and should be addressed in the workplace. The problem can longer be ignored given its prevalence and its immense impact on business. The US Surgeon General reports that domestic violence is the number one cause of injury for women between the ages of 15 and 55. According to the Bureau of National Affairs, this problem costs employers between $3 billion and $5 billion annually. This costs stem from increased health-care costs, lost productivity and absenteeism. Human resources professionals can help battered employees by formulating a company policy statement regarding domestic violence to bring the issue out into the open. They should also train Employee Assistance Program counselors in dealing with victims of domestic violence and advertise the company's help lines and employee assistance programs.
