Article Abstract:
The two components of successful recruiting programs with regard to hiring excellent sales professionals are: (1) planning the campaign to attract candidates, and (2) defining the selection process to identify potentially successful sales personnel. Both of these aspects of recruiting are discussed. Proper recruiting efforts are easily identified since they reject more candidates in an effort to select according to well-defined criteria, and they are accompanied by early success among new hires in the sales area. Examples of criteria used to select sales personnel and recruiting techniques are discussed, as is the need to properly evaluate employed sales staffs prior to recruiting new personnel.

High rates of employee turnover are usually caused by flawed recruitment, training or supervisory procedures, or by low compensation. It can be prevented by hiring the people who most closely match an ideal candidate profile, rather than relying on the interviewer's intuition. Training should thoroughly cover the skills and knowledge required to do specific jobs, and the people selected for supervisory positions should be chosen for their ability to manage people, rather than on the basis of past performance of a specialized skill. Existing rates of pay should be evaluated to determined if they are commensurate with the skill and effort required to do the job.

Automation of the personnel function only began in the mid-1970s, yet already many Human Resources Information Systems are obsolete. There are two options: add on to the old system, or buy a new one. Both the payroll department and the computer department should involved in this decision. Personnel should in the meantime make up two lists: a priority list that the system must perform, and a personal list of wants. Compare these in meetings with payroll and computer departments, bearing in mind that no solution will be perfect.
