New internal jobs found for displaced employees
Article Abstract:
Household International Inc is the recipient of the 1992 Optimas Award for Vision for its establishment of an employee-placement program that assisted displaced workers in finding new positions within the organization. The Illinois-based financial services company displayed great foresight by showing a high level of awareness of the effects of downsizing on its workforce and taking action to ensure that all affected employees were relocated to other positions. Following staff reductions, freeze-hiring was put into effect and a 'displaced employee' committee was formed. Employee potential and not work experience became the committee's prime consideration for placements. An in-house job posting program was placed online for use by all workers. The successful displaced employed committee has since then evolved into a career-development committee at Household.

Jean Tierney - even recent hires were placed
Article Abstract:
Jean Tierney was one new hire at Household International Inc who is extremely thankful for the company's efforts to assist all employees affected by downsizing to find new positions within the organization. Her being a recent hire made Tierney an obvious target for a layoff and she expected to be among the last to be offered a new position. Household's dedication to its employees was demonstrated in its ability to prioritize the placement of affected workers over the hiring of new people from the outside. Household's human resources arm was in constant contact with Tierney throughout the search and continually assuring her that they were looking for a suitable position for her. Interviews within the company ultimately led Tierney to her present position as secretary to Kenneth Robin, an assistant general counsel.

In his previous position, Signo's accounting functions were basically in terms of the planning and budgeting aspects of the Mortgage Services division. His new postion as staff accountant at headquarters gave him hands-on experience into the 'actual numbers' aspect of accounting.
