New trends in relocation
Article Abstract:
Businesses are often prompted to relocate by escalating rents, the difficulty of recruiting qualified employees and the remoteness from industrial suppliers and consumer markets. While relocation may be beneficial for a company in the long run, it can be difficult particularly when such concerns as house prices and spouses' careers make employees balk at the idea of transferring to another location. Two organizations, the UK Dept of Health and Nissan European Technology Centre Ltd (NETC), have each developed a relocation policy to help overcome employee resistance to the move. The Health Dept's London-to-Leeds move and NETC's transfer from Sunderland to London were both made easier by provisions guaranteeing the disposition of homes for employees who will relocate. NETC also held seminars and counseling regarding children's education and employment for spouses.

Preparing staff to live up to the Citizen's Charter
Article Abstract:
Both the Labor Party and the ruling Conservative Party have pledged to enact a Citizen's Charter that shall uphold a citizen's right to fair and equal service from organizations serving the general public. The platforms of the two parties differ principally in their scope; the Conservative government's proposals are aimed at public sector organizations, while Labor's policies extend to the private sector. Given the likelihood of a Citizen's Charter after the June 1992 elections, organizations shall need to improve their training and development programs to ensure that they can provide the levels of service that shall be expected under the terms of the proposed charter.
