New motivational strategies to pursue
Article Abstract:
The entry of the baby boom generation into the workforce has helped change the values of the work environment. Today's workers often place importance on intrinsic values such as respect from coworkers, interesting work, and a chance to be creative and develop new skills rather than achieving higher salary and promotions. Ten strategies are recommended for motivating employees, which include: assigning a mentor; giving a temporary assignment in a different department or job; cross training; working as part of a team; assigning a project that stretches the employee's capabilities; allowing opportunities to work on committees; and providing feedback over lunch.

One manager's journey beyond performance reviews
Article Abstract:
A case study is presented in which a general manager at a manufacturing plant had failed repeatedly to improve the performance of a subordinate through conventional performance review procedures. The key to a successful performance review is for both the manager and the subordinate to share expectations of one another. Supervisors should try to shift the review away from complaints and emphasize the the level of performance possible by the employee.
