Why a Puerto Rican vacation for 1,800 makes good business sense
Article Abstract:
A-P-A Transport Corp of North Bergen, NJ will send all 1,800 of its employees for a three-day vacation in Puerto Rico to celebrate the transportation company's 40th anniversary. Employees will be divided into two groups: one to vacation over the Memorial Day weekend, and one to vacation over Columbus Day weekend. Previous A-P-A anniversary celebrations include the 25th anniversary's weekend in the Catskills, the 30th anniversary's weekend in Nassau, and the 35th anniversary's luxury cruise. A-P-A claims that such celebrations are not merely publicity stunts, since they comply with the company's emphasis on working hard and rewarding employees for hard work. Other people-oriented management policies at A-P-A include provision of employee recreation facilities and interviewing of all new employees by A-P-A pres Armand Pohan. A-P-A's annual employee turnover rate is five percent.

Operation Phoenix: the business of human resources
Article Abstract:
Swiss Bank Corp (SBC) used a human resources repositioning program known as Operation Phoenix to transform the personnel function from a record-keeping cost center to a consumer-oriented function tied in with business and generating revenue. SBC human resources VP Michael H. Mitchell says that the advent of the world marketplace and international competition will continue to force price cuts and result in continued pressure for organizational streamlining and obtaining the most production out of staff. SBC's program began in Nov 1985 with an environmental analysis, and continued with steps such as formulating a departmental mission and game plan, gaining management support, conducting an internal audit of structures and services, developing a new human resources function, and adapting to change.

In the holiday spirit: organ transplant education at Dow
Article Abstract:
Among U.S. companies that encourage personnel goodwill and generosity throughout the year is the Michigan-based Dow Chemical Company. In the second year of a massive education endeavor entitled The Donor Awareness Program, Dow has pledged $1,000,000 to the program with its wide range of projects and educational outreach efforts. Dow is supporting the need for large-scale cooperation toward donor programs with different approaches, including: underwriting the production of donor cards to be distributed by the Boy Scouts of America, sponsoring television public service announcements related to organ transplants, and allowing corporate jets to be used for organ delivery needs. Bob Charlton of Dow's Washington, D.C. office discusses Dow's Donor Awareness Program and its objectives.
