Recruitment by any other name is turnover
Article Abstract:
Business enterprises dependent upon seasonal employees frequently experience high employee turnover rates because there are no strong incentives for employees to stay on the job. Younger workers are especially prone to leave a job after saving enough money for school expenses. Great America, a California amusement park operated by Marriott Corporation, had 200 percent turnover rate reduced to 20 percent by the implementation of an employee drawing. The drawing's first prize was a $10,000 shopping spree; to be eligible for the contest, an employee had to stay on the job throughout the summer season. Due to the success of the contest, Marriott's Great America had the lowest turnover in its history. The contest was developed by the firm of Bernard Hodes, and a modified form of the contest was successful in reducing employee turnover at the Beaver Creek ski lodge in Vail, Colorado.

Annual reports: a picture of dedication
Article Abstract:
The value of employees is increasingly recognized by companies, as reflected by the focus on employees in their annual reports. It is no longer true that focusing on employees in annual reports is used to cover up a bad year. The best financial reports show their employees as whole people, as employees making important contributions, yet having private lives; they also reflect sincerity in appreciation of the employees. Examples of such reports are those of the Children's Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati, Ohio), Group Health Inc. (a Minnesota-based health maintenance organization), Dow Jones and Company, Safeway Stores Inc., Pillsbury, H.J. Heinz Co., and Herman Miller, Inc. Stockholder response to such reports is usually favorable.

A great performance at motivation
Article Abstract:
The Electro-Optics Division of Honeywell Inc developed an innovative employee motivation and retention program as a solution to low employee morale. The program was called 'Great Performers'. Its purpose was to recognize employees at all levels of the company who perform jobs well. Employee photos and quotations about overcoming obstacles were posted in company offices, and the posters of the employees were presented along side of pictures of great performers in the arts, science, and business. This not only served to recognize employees, but also made the employees feel important through the visual and textual association with famous people.
