Safety watchdog relicenses nuclear power stations sites before privatisation
Article Abstract:
Operators of nuclear power stations will have to follow a strict regulatory regime under the terms of 16 new site licences which have been issued by the Health and Safety Executive. This comes as the UK government draws up plans to restructure and privatise the nuclear industry. Under these plans, Magnox Electric (MEP), a public sector operator, will be responsible for all Magnox power stations except two owned by BNFL.

A report by the Transportation and Technology Centre Inc. of Colorado suggests that there are two main reasons for the poor safety record of UK railways. Too many broken rails are left in place and the rail network has too many franchisees.
