Social security
Article Abstract:
Mexico's social security law took effect in 1943 with the setting up of a mandatory insurance plan for all private employees covering pensions, medical benefits and workers' compensation. The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) was established to administer the plan and is financed by the government, employers and employees. IMSS benefits are discussed and the schedule of employer and employee pension contributions from 1990 to 1996 is given. IMSS' costs have always gone beyond its budget and pension reserves have not been set up. Changes in the system, however, are being planned to ensure IMSS's viability.

Hecho en America del Norte/made in North America: the North American Free Trade Agreement
Article Abstract:
The political future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is uncertain due to the stiff opposition by the environmentaland labor groups in the US and Canada. Opponents of NAFTA believe that the current agreement will depress wages and employment conditions, diminish workersafety laws and dismantle consumer safety and environmental protection laws. Despite of the current minimal trade relations among the US, Canada and Mexico,NAFTA has indicated that Mexico is ready to adopt Western entrepreneurial values and participate in the Western trade.

Shining light in African social security
Article Abstract:
Social security program members in African states have been receiving minimal retirement benefits despite the high inflation rates. The Gambia's Social Security and Housing Finance Corp aims to provide its citizens with affordable social benefits. Its Federated Pension Scheme's and National Provident Fund's investment returns of 14.5% and 15.3%, respectively, are way above the country's 6% inflation rate. Hopefully, other African nations will adopt similar schemes for the benefit of its people.
