Testing times for the chemicals industry
Article Abstract:
The lack of information about the potential hazards associated with many chemicals means that some of the warning labels provided by suppliers are based on deduction. There are around 100,000 substances available in the European Union, produced before 1981 and which have never been tested. They have been placed on the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances. Some 110 of these chemicals have been given priority for testing by various member states. Chemicals made after 1981 undergo several tests to determine whether they require warning labels, but many of these also end up with incorrect data sheets.

Handling lifting operations
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom business organizations attribute reduced absenteeism to the implementation of the 1992 Manual Handling Operations Regulations. The Regulations are expensive to implement but seem to be very effective in cutting down accidents. Organizations not abiding by the regulations should be forced to do so, say some industry operators. Further guidance is required from the Health and Safety Executive.
