The NHS invests in sharp practices
Article Abstract:
The Strategic Human Resource Development Initiative (SHRDI) of the National Health Service (NHS) was launched in Oct 1990 as a six-month program set to run until Apr 1991. SHRDI's principal objectives were to encourage a greater emphasis on strategic long-term planning in the courses developed by NHS trainers, while also encouraging increased use of real-life projects in training programs. The SHRDI was launched mainly because it was felt that trainers were not adequately preparing NHS managers for the business-led environment that the NHS organizational reforms were promoting. The NHS opted to implement SHRDI by training small groups of trainers in each region, giving each the freedom to devise ways of disseminating the new training model to others. Since the SHRDI's initial launch in 1990, several regions have gone on to implement the second phase of the program, known as SHRDI II.

How to groom the top glass manager
Article Abstract:
Pilkington Glass has created an effective training program for middle-level managers which is based on five phases. The company developed the program as a result of a survey conducted in 1985-1986 which showed a need for career development in the organization. The PGL Business Development Program was established to improve business comprehension and performance, and each year, 50 managers take part in the program, which lasts 39 weeks and two days. The program includes such things as project work, workbook study, and presentations. Pilkington Glass has achieved numerous benefits as a result of the program including: changing attitudes about training and development; helping managers to cope with work demands; and helping plateaued managers to revitalize and pursue further career development.
