When training turns into a box office hit
Article Abstract:
The Museum of the Moving Image (MMI) uses eight actors posing as characters to serve as guides at major attractions within the museum. The actor-guides have done much to enhance museumgoers' enjoyment of the displays and have made a significant contribution to MMI becoming one of the biggest tourist attractions in London. The actor-guides must assimilate a great deal of knowledge, and training is essential to successfully inculcating them in their roles. Three elements are emphasized in the training program: background information; improvisation; and safety procedures. The training has been a success and has led to the implementation of a training program for the museum's front office staff. The program illustrates the benefits of successful business training: museum attendance has exceeded projections by 25%.

Steel partners
Article Abstract:
Armco Steel has launched a diversity training program that adopts the subtle, long-term 'consulting pair' approach developed by consultants Merlin and Pat Pope. The approach uses volunteer 'consulting pairs' who, after receiving specialized training, work with new recruits to assist them in dealing with the discriminatory attitudes that the recruits might encounter in the course of their work. The 'consulting pairs' approach was developed by the Popes as an alternative to what they consider to be the overly aggressive, and often counterproductive, consciousness-raising approaches used by other firms.

A new module army to fight ill health
Article Abstract:
Great Britain's National Health Service has developed a work-based management training program to help health facilities and professionals to become more customer-conscious. The program of six modules has been implemented at six health care facilities so far. The experience of one facility in Wakefield reveals that staff received benefits they have been able to apply on the job, such as increased confidence and new abilities to put issues into perspective.
