Theft control starts with HR strategies
Article Abstract:
Employee theft is a serious problem that results in annual losses of $40 billion for most companies. This type of theft is not confined to money and other goods, but includes the stealing of company information and trade secrets. The reasons behind these thefts are manifold, and the answer to battle this type of crime lies in effective personnel management. HR staff have started to implement more stringent screening procedures and have utilized pre-employment tests in undertaking recruitment processes. HR executives feel that the only way to build an honest workforce is to promote honesty within the corporate culture. Offering enhanced benefit packages, recognition of honest services rendered, impartial treatment of employees and establishing disciplinary regulations are some strategies to be considered in curbing the alarming rate of increase of corporate crime.

Florida Power turns training into dollars
Article Abstract:
Florida Power Corp's competency-based training program has been so successful that the utility is marketing the program to other organizations. Unlike most companies that market their training programs, Florida Power has not formed a separate group to market its program. To begin marketing the program, Mgr of Employee Development Walt Thurn attended a marketing workshop, used speaking engagements to inform other companies of the program, and conducted on-site presentations. The program has provided Florida Power with over $500,000 in revenue. The funds have been reinvested in the employee development department, which has obtained respect and recognition within the organization. The components of the training program include a computer-based system to monitor employees, an audit process to evaluate retention and progress, and a pre-employment evaluation program.
