The crisis in workplace literacy
Article Abstract:
Employers can help reduce functional illiteracy among employees by pre-employment screening, mid-employment testing, remedial or advanced literacy training, and participation in community literacy programs. Pre-employment screening targets candidates deficient in basic literacy skills. Mid-employment testing helps identify the particular training needed by the employee. Remedial or advanced training programs may be set up for interested employees. Many communities near commercial or industrial centers offer literacy programs, or employers may wish to establish their own internally. Many large corporations, such as Standard Oil of Indiana, Polaroid, Nabisco, and General Motors, combat illiteracy in this way.

Is your appraisal system headed for court?
Article Abstract:
Methods employed to evaluate personal skill, knowledge, potential, and worthiness are often discriminatory and subjective. Many personnel decisions regarding pay for performance and career training are not made with due process, but by arbitrary judgement. The federal courts are increasingly finding evaluation methods to be discriminatory to women and minorities. The main areas attacked for discrimination are: promotion, discharge, layoffs, and merit pay. Example cases are discussed to illustrate the types of defense strategies that employers need to use to address personnel actions.

Why hire humanities graduates?
Article Abstract:
Businesses need humanities graduates among their employees. Specialized training, popular over the past couple of decades, has not created a generation of business leaders. Humanities education teaches students how to think, and produces self-defined, motivated, adaptable personalities. A 7-point plan to improve hiring practices by factoring in liberal arts requirements is proposed.
