The employee selection interview: a fresh look at an old problem
Article Abstract:
An in-depth examination of decision processes of 29 interviewers at a service company was conducted. Findings revealed that recruiters based their decisions on different factors, employed varying hiring standards and utilized decision processes that did not match their preferred decision processes. The causes of these idiosyncratic interview decisions were the interviewers' perspectives on the ideal applicant, their information processing skills, similarity bias and interviewers' behaviors. These judgments may affect organizations by lowering employee performance, raising the likelihood of costly legal judgment, diminishing applicant attraction and consequently undermining organizational performance. To improve interview decisions, employers should create selection criteria, decide how criteria will be examined, design interview guide, train interviewers and monitor the effectiveness of interviews.

Corporate strategy, executive selection, and firm performance
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to test whether firms select different CEOs based on their corporate plans. The study also considered the tenure levels of selected CEOs and their relationship with subsequent organizational performance and corporate diversification. Two approaches were utilized to define a CEO's level of firm experience. The first approach used firm tenure to classify CEOs as either insiders or outsiders. The second was based on organization tenure at the time of succession as a function of firm experience. Firm performance changes were also determined as changes in the firm's return on assets. Results showed that CEO selection with lower levels of firm-experiences is directly correlated with enhanced performance among non-diversified companies.
