The impact of functional classification schema on managerial decision processes
Article Abstract:
Functional classification schema affects the organizational decision making and action of managers. Analysis shows that usage of labeling, such as in functional classification of organizational issues in sensemaking processes greatly affects succeeding decision processes. Studying the relationship of functional classifications, such as threat-opportunity classification scheme, and succeeding decision-making behavior gives managers knowledge on how issue framing affects their decision-making processes.

Good business decisions and solutions to problems often are not accepted on their merit alone but must be sold to staff and management. The guidelines to enhance the acceptance of decisions and solutions include making sure staff and management know and understand the problems before they are presented with solutions; presenting both the positive and negative aspects of decisions and solutions; and presenting decisions and solutions in the language and frame of reference of management and staff.

Problem-solving depends on finding and eliminating causes in a systematic way, beginning with a clear description of the difficulty and ending with a definite action plan. Intermediate steps include brainstorming and choosing the best solution. Group problem-solving is recommended, especially when it is inclusive of staff from all levels.
