The experience of burnout and work-non-work success in male and female engineers: a matched-pairs comparison
Article Abstract:
Burnout and success in the professional and private lives of people in technical careers are explored. A study of 51 male and 51 female engineers with similar organizational positions, outlooks on their jobs, and orientations toward their careers indicates that male engineers are better able than their female counterparts to integrate work success with their private lives, and that work and non-work successes are compatible for men but conflict for women. These results support the view that burnout is related to the fit between personal attributes and a person's total work-non-work environment. Implications for career consultants and human resource managers in technically-oriented organizations are discussed.

Human resources managers focus on stress and new patterns of work
Article Abstract:
Stress-related illness is becoming a serious problem in the UK, causing around 80 million working days to be lost every year. Against this background, employers must now pay more attention to how they manage their staff, looking at issues such as workload and hours of work. Any employer failing to take reasonable steps to reduce stress in the workplace could face a very expensive court case.
