The loneliness of the long-distance trainer
Article Abstract:
'Open learning' is growing in popularity in Britain in both the public and private sectors. Its flexibility is its primary advantage over more traditional training programs, allowing users to study at their own convenience, enroll at any time (without having to be concerned with prerequisites), study at their own pace, and learn occupational requirements at their own pace. Considerable diversity exists within the category of open learning, but all such programs share some common attributes, several of which are discussed. The implementation of open learning programs and the design of training tools to be used in the programs are described. A case study is presented of the Oxfordshire Project for the Training of Instructors and Supervisors.

Who needs the new Job Training Scheme?
Article Abstract:
The new Job Training Scheme of Great Britain's Manpower Services Commission (MSC) is discussed. The objectives of the program are to give training and work experience for the long-term unemployed, to have more flexibility in terms of the types of training available at the local level, and to close the gap between the skills of the unemployed and skills required by employers. The implementation of the Job Training Scheme, its progress to date and the problems encountered by the program are described.

Government Plans to Give MSC More Say in Further Education
Article Abstract:
A white paper on job training calls for more control over job training in colleges throughout England and Wales. Occupational training must be modernized and adult training must be continued to update skills. The white paper was met with some resentment; however, it is agreed that the government and local educators should work together to update and improve youth and adult training.
