The new workforce meets the changing workplace: strains, dilemmas, and contradictions in attempts to implement participative and entrepreneurial management
Article Abstract:
While it is generally theorized that the kind of limited workplace reforms existing in a shift to a participative and entrepreneurial emphasis would address the evolving needs of a changing labor force by generating competitiveness and opportunity, it is unlikely that such personnel management systems would in fact reduce adversity to change. The contradictions are: pay inequities, changes in management control, and work-family pressures leading to equal opportunity goal threats. These three problems are raised by the implementation of participative management and entrepreneurial pay programs. The potential consequences of workplace reforms must be viewed in terms of the larger political and social setting of the corporation, where some fundamental changes and new concepts may be necessary to offset the strains and contradictions emerging in today's bureaucracies.

Repetitive strain injuries in the information age workplace
Article Abstract:
The explosion of information technology and the resulting increase in the use of computers in the workplace has significantly raised the incidence of repetitive strain injuries (RSI). This condition, which is common among frequent users of computer keyboards and mouse device, has an adverse impact not only on individuals but also on their employers. These companies incur such direct costs as medical treatment, lost work time and replacement of equipment as well as indirect costs, such as decreased product output and recruitment and training of replacement employees. Although the court does not generally side with employers who sustain RSI, sufferers may be considered as a disabled under the Americans with Disabilities Act and therefore require reasonable accommodation. Guidelines on how to prevent RSI in the workplace are discussed.

Management women in the corporate workplace: possibilities for the year 2000
Article Abstract:
US corporations have four tools for profitability and productivity at their disposal as they prepare for the challenges of the next century: (1) inclusion of family issues and concerns, (2) commitment to innovation within the corporation, (3) employee training, and (4) women's offerings to the management of transition. Women who want to develop both careers and families will still face tradeoffs in the twenty-first century, albeit less severe ones than those faced by women today. Businesses that address family issues creatively will benefit greatly in contributions from employees freed of stress byproducts such as guilt, anger, and anxiety.
