The politics of partnership? Innovation in employment relations in the Scottish spirits industry
Article Abstract:
Guinness management linked changes at operational level with the introduction of new working practices following a period of reorganisation. Union representatives were excluded from negotiations until the deal had been agreed. The agreement of unions was necessary in order for management to achieve the necessary changes to compete in the marketplace. The combination of unions and management working together led to the success of the deal. Allied Domecq's project to stop inefficiency at shop floor level was less successful because unions were completely excluded.

Not part of the family? The limits to managing the corporate way in international hotel chains
Article Abstract:
Trends towards internationalization in the hotel business can lead to tensions and there has been debate about how to internationalize. So called 'soft' mechanisms of integration, such as corporate culture devices are seen as remedying the negative consequences of ethno-centric approaches, but this should be treated with caution. The hotel chains studied use the rhetoric of the international perspective, but this is far from international management.
