The role of the personnel function: roles, perceptions and processes in an NHS trust
Article Abstract:
A case study of the personnel function in a UK National Health Service trust gives an insight into some deficiencies in existing work on the role of the personnel function. It is clear that, in seeking to ascertain what roles the personnel function is taking on, it is not possible to rely merely on the personnel function's own interpretation of developments. It is important to fully take into account the part played by other groups within the organization. Middle-level operational managers will probably play a significant role in many organizations, but it is not possible to infer from this case study that the personnel function's relationship with these managers will always be a significant one.
