The safety-HR connection
Article Abstract:
Growing awareness of the importance of the interplay between human relations (HR) and safety is prompting many organizations to assess this connection with regard to their specific work environments and plan for these two function's integration at all levels of the organizational structure. Among the possible scenarios for the HR and safety functions' placement in the company hierarchy are when the safety function reports to HR, when the safety function reports directly to the supervisor, when the safety function has limited communications at the corporate level, and when different reporting channels are used by the safety and HR functions. The organizational integration HR-safety link will call for a comprehensive employee wellness scheme combined with a safety and protection services program.

The wellness program of insurance provider Central States Health and Life Company of Omaha has successfully promoted health awareness among its employees resulting in stronger morale, higher levels of productivity, and reductions in health care expenditures. The program is based on what Central States CEO William M. Kizer has termed the Smoking, Alcohol, Nutrition, and Exercise (SANE) approach to worksite wellness. The program provides smoking cessation classes; information on new policies concerning seat belt use and alcohol use; nutritional and healthful supplements to regular cafeteria food; and jazzercise, yoga, and tae kwon do classes.
