Three ways to prove HR's value
Article Abstract:
Changing workers' values and the increasing pressure for the human resources (HR) department to demonstrate its contribution to the company's bottom line require accompanying changes in the practice of personnel management. HR practitioners would need to increase their participation in three critical areas: leadersip, planning and work improvement. The HR function must lead the company's efforts to define the leadership environment. HR professionals should be actively involved in the documentation and creation of vision or mission statements that would set the tone for the development of the corporate culture. In the area of corporate planning, personnel managers could get invited to boardroom planning sessions by showing the value of HR program through return on investment figures. As for being involved in work improvement strategies, HR professionals should focus on training all organizational members to determine which processes further corporate goals.

HR development at Polaroid
Article Abstract:
Human resources (HR) professionals with Polaroid Corp successfully established an HR development program for the company following several previous attempts. Two important issues that had thwarted the previous attempts were timing and priorities: during each of the unsuccessful attempts, HR staffers were busy with other programs, and there seemed to be little support for new programs. The conditions that the HR department concluded must be met before a program could be implemented included full support for the effort from top HR mangers, the involvement of line management in the initial planning, and agreement in the HR department on their position within the company. The steps that the HR department at Polaroid believe must be taken to establish a development program in another company include internal research on HR resources, external research on the role of HR, and developing a proposal.

Communicating with a personal touch
Article Abstract:
Employee communication is important because it is a means for firms to meet company goals, and often communication efforts that add a personal touch are very effective. Some examples of employee-focused efforts include offering such things as early retirement when a reduction in the workforce is required, or personal financial planning. There are a number of benefits to employee communications including increasing productivity; increasing employee satisfaction; and helping to achieve cost levels. Several case studies are also presented to illustrate aspects of positive employee communications.
