Delco Electronics Corp's Delco Systems Operations has designed an office-support career progression plan that provides employees, particularly the secretaries and clerks, with the chance for recognition and the option to select their field of interest. The plan offers four career paths: word processing specialists, multisystems specialists, administrative assistants, and secretaries. The traditional system of basing secretarial levels on the level of the boss has posed problems involving job definition and work appreciation. The job designations of 'clerk' and 'secretary' have been perceived to be demeaning, hence the term 'office support' is designated for these positions. The four career paths serve to define more specifically the levels of responsibility as integrated with the centralized corporate compensation structure in order to maintain market pay that is competitive.

A mentor for all reasons
Article Abstract:
Mentoring is a useful training and development tool that can also be applied to such problems as labor shortages, changing work force composition, the growing number of mergers, the need for innovation, and the development of the cross-cultural business. Both the employee and the sponsoring organization can benefit from mentoring, by promoting the development of corporate managers, integrating the employee into the organization, promoting creativity and loyalty, and keeping communication lines open.
