Cutting workers' compensation costs
Article Abstract:
Lost duty days, declining productivity, escalation of workers' compensation costs, and the threat of intervention from Washington headquarters motivated top management at the Milwaukee Veteran's Administration Medical Center to develop a multi-faceted worker health and safety program that saved over $100,000 in direct costs from July 1984 through June 1986. A local policy was published regarding temporary light duty assignments for ill and injured employees, but workers' compensation costs continued to grow. Case records revealed that improper lifting techniques and employee obesity were two major causes of employee injuries. An employee wellness program was initiated, an accident review board was created, and an employee health and safety unit was established in the personnel service.

The personnel literature data base: a remedy for research woes
Article Abstract:
The personnel database Personnel Literature Database (PLD) provides access to the publications Personnel Psychology and Journal of Applied Psychology. The publications Personnel Journal and Personnel Administrator will be added soon. Professional data bases like this can be replicated by personnel departments with microcomputers. The four steps involved in the process are planning the data base, choosing the software management program, indexing or abstracting individual articles for inclusion in the data base, and entering the information into the computer. Planning considerations involve decisions about what information to include in each record. Selecting a management program involves choosing between commercial programs such as Ashton-Tate's dBase III Plus or Symantec's Q & A.
