Positive discipline - sending the right or wrong message?
Article Abstract:
Four HR experts were asked to discuss how effective positive discipline is in dealing with employee infractions. One HR director says positive discipline has been effective in deterring violations of company rules by employees. In her company, positive discipline involves reminding employees of standards and asking for their consent to solve the problem. Another personnel manager says positive discipline at his organization requires misbehaving employees to go home and think about their undesirable deeds, write an essay on how to solve the problem, and return to work as productive workers. He reports that, when the leave was unpaid, the employees are responsive to the disciplinary action. Yet another HR director states that this kind of discipline is laudable. However, a labor and employment arbitrator cautions companies to consider union concerns before implementing positive discipline.

Recruiting and training for cyberspace: America Online boots up for hypergrowth
Article Abstract:
The phenomenal expansion of the commercial online service provider America Online Inc. (AOL) has compelled its management to create a human resources department. Launched only in 1995, the human resources department is tasked with guiding the mostly new and young workforce to satisfy the rising demands of subscribers for quick, real-time information and customer service. Some of the specific duties of the department involve compensation and benefits, staffing and training. It recruits call-center representatives through local job fairs and recruits content producers and computer programmers through campus recruiting and the Web site Online Career Center. As for training, the staff is still developing a plan for providing non-technical training for employees.
