Wedding HR to strategic alliances
Article Abstract:
Human resource (HR) executives should actively participate in the strategic alliance efforts of their companies to ensure the success of such initiatives. HR professionals can help shape the culture of the two partners, identify the business needs of the alliance and establish a shared language. Moreover, HR practitioners can straighten out potential problems related to the management of the compensation and benefits of alliance employees. Companies that have already allowed HR executives to take part in the development of strategic alliances and discovered success along the way include Digital Equipment Corp. and Lau Technologies, Dresser Industries Inc. and Ingersoll-Rand Co., and J.B. Hunt Transport. To become effective players in strategic alliances, HR executives should develop their interaction and communication facilitator skills, be electronically educated and aggressively promote their role in strategic alliances.

This employee may be loafing. Can you tell? Should you care?
Article Abstract:
Employee loafing is becoming a headache for many companies. A survey of HR executives reveals that a majority witness or hear reports that employees are spending longer hours surfing the Internet or participating in other diversionary activities. Possible root causes of loafing are downsizing, stress, boredom, flex-work arrangements and learning of new technology and skills. Given the enormous cost of loafing on the company, there is an urgent need to address this problem immediately. However, the making the distinction between loafing and working is becoming more difficult, what with the rising role of computers in the workplace. Discipline is undoubtedly required for excessive abusers. However, understanding, fair judgment and strong leadership may be all that is needed for moderate offenders.
