What value is your management style?
Article Abstract:
Personnel managers should understand that many workers in today's work force do not respond to traditional incentives such as more money or a higher position. Two strategies for managing the careers of others include: (1) motivating people according to what they value, and (2) down-playing the destructive effects that careerism can have on an organization by improving the match between person and job. The career orientations of workers include: getting promotions and raises; having job security; avoiding commitments as much as possible; having the chance to do creative or challenging work; and balancing the needs of the organization against the needs of the individual.

Problem performers: the third-party solution
Article Abstract:
Job counseling may be required to treat employees who are problem performers. Dealing with lackluster performance may require sensitive management handling, as outside factors may have serious repercussions. By retaining an outside counselor, one who is unbiased and experienced in the area, management can uncover the true nature of the employee's problem, the emotional or psychological basis, and provide adequate treatment. Crisis intervention permitted one employer and its employee to understand both their own and the other's feelings.
