The challenges of a multicultural work force
Article Abstract:
Personnel management considerations when employing people from varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds are discussed, using the case of Racal-Vadic as an example. Racal-Vadic, a computer modem manufacturer, has a relatively large number of employees for whom English is a second language; for example, the engineering department is 70 percent Asian, East Indian and other minority groups. The training programs developed at Racal-Vadic to facilitate managing people with varied cultural backgrounds centered on communications education that stressed pronunciation, writing and grammar. Foreign-born engineers were also taught business meeting behavior (so they would know when and how to participate in management meetings). The training programs and their success are detailed.

Hiring the handicapped confronts cultural uneasiness
Article Abstract:
The primary obstacle to hiring handicapped people is management's perception that needs of disabled employees and businesses are incompatible. Planning strategies that can remove these barriers are: determining the cost effectiveness of hiring the handicapped; learning the legal aspects and recruiting techniques for hiring handicapped workers; identifying common needs of the disabled employee and the industry; overcoming the anxieties of supervisors and staff about working with a disabled worker; and measuring the handicapped worker's performance according to abilities, rather than disabilities.

Einstein's advice on work in the next century
Article Abstract:
What if Einstein had applied his famous intelligence to the problems of the workplace? What are the traits that would help people cope with their realities that Einstein would have developed in much the same way as he developed universal physics laws? He would have pointed out independent self concepts, non-absolutist belief systems, openness, curiosity and idealism as personality traits that help people to cope with workplace problems and stress. Encouraging such personality traits in employees could very well form the basis of personnel management in the upcoming century.
